Last year, high school student Mia McCaslin, of Port Tobacco, interviewed Adrianne Cooper, a computer and flight test engineer with NAVAIR, for her winning essay. Interview topics for the essay can include the womans motivation for pursuing her chosen career in STEM, her educational background, specific day-to-day activities regarding her career, her family and cultural backgrounds affect on her career path, and her advice to students interested in pursuing a career in her field. Extension of fundamental algebraic concepts and operations, problem solving and applications, linear, quadratic, rational, and radical equations, equations in two variables, graphs, systems of equations, complex numbers, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series. Contestants are required to interview a woman in a STEM career working in academia, industry or government and write a 500- to 800-word narrative essay based on the interview.
